Course Description

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Red Cross allows healthcare and public safety professionals to meet a variety of certification and licensing requirements.

Our healthcare providers’ BLS curriculum includes all standard scientific learning objectives necessary in professional resuscitation courses, but also allows students to develop their critical thinking and teamwork skills, and work on reflection and debriefing, which serves to strengthen their overall learning and work experience. In addition, our courses are modular and flexible, and offer medical directors, educators and Red Cross training partners the ability to tailor courses to their students’ specific needs.

BLS can be delivered in 2 formats to meet the needs of students and offer flexibility for instructors. All formats include the same learning objectives and result in the same course completion card.

  • Instructor-led Training:
Instructors deliver both the cognitive portion of training and the psychomotor component of thorough skills practice and testing in a classroom setting
  • Blended Learning – HeartCode BLS:
Includes a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, and a hands-on session.

Healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings.

Basic Life Support (BLS) refers to the care healthcare providers and public safety professionals  provide to patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest or airway obstructions. BLS includes psychomotor skills for performing high-quality CPR, using an automated external defibrillator (AED) and relieving an obstructed airway for patients of all ages.

BLS also focusses on the integration of the following key skills to help responders achieve  optimal patient outcomes:

  • Critical thinking: Clear and rational thinking based on facts presented and the provider’s experience and expertise
  • Problem solving: Identifying solutions to issues that arise using readily available resources
  • Communication: A closed-loop process involving a sender, message and receiver
  • Team dynamics: Integration and coordination of all responders working together toward a common goal
